Prince Bishop – Come Alive (2021)

If Radiohead were to have a lovechild with Red Hot Chili Peppers, the chances are it would be Prince Bishop. The brainchild of singer-songwriter Benjamin Trenerry, the UK-based rock band combines evocative lyrics with moving melodies creating a heavenly swirl of music. Alright, so they have only one song on Spotify, but one track can be heavenly and serenade your ears. Featured on NARC Magazine, Planet Radio, Reyt Good Music, NE Volume and various playlists, the relatively new trio is reaching audiences on an international level. We take a gander at their debut single ‘Come Alive’.

With tinges of old-school rock bands mixed into the contemporary indie-rock meets alt-rock design, ‘Come Alive’ has a soothing, chilled out vibe. Yet, while the melodic arrangement is interesting with harmonic layers, there seems to be a turbulence underlying the sound. What I mean is, the dynamic guitars and pounding drums add a slight craziness ala 70s rock to the charming, soulful single. Rich and eclectic, Prince Bishop show innovation in ‘Come Alive’ as they begin with soft and flowing, crescendo into high-powered tones and end with a heart-warming stillness.

Penned before the Covid-19 pandemic, the trio has been sitting with ‘Come Alive’ for almost two years (give or take). Ben Trenerry shares that Prince Bishop is “…so excited to finally get it out there. It is music with something at stake, music as a window to the soul.” A window to the soul is right as ‘Come Alive’ represents a melancholic but hopeful perspective of human fragility. Entirely elemental, the track uses all the instrumentation to create a progressive piece with all aspects having dominance; however, the richness of the instrumentation (including Trenerry’s vocals) come together as a united and beautiful whole.

In addition to the single, Prince Bishop has released an official music video for ‘Come Alive’. Please note that this video uses lighting effects and image transitions that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
