9 o’clock Nasty – Sexy Back (2021)

With music compared to tequila and vodka shots, it’s no wonder 9 o’clock Nasty’s music has a hard-hitting effect. Known for their brash, loud and unmistakeably attention-grabbing style, the UK-based trio are genre-defying with elements of alt-rock, grunge, punk and indie-rock in their sound. Following them from ‘Dry’ to ‘Cut’, the lads are firm favourites on our side and seem to have captivated critics from many notable blogs including Rising Artists Blog and Mango Wave. Today we will be looking at their cover of Justin Timberlake’s well-known single ‘Sexy Back’.

Truth be told, I do not often review cover songs. I listen to them and enjoy many new takes on old tracks, but they rarely cross my virtual desk. It is only the most interesting and unique covers that truly capture my attention and 9 o’clock Nasty’s ‘Sexy Back’ certainly falls into this category. I mean, why would a rock group play a Justin Timberlake song?

While I am not a massive fan of Justin Timberlake, I must admit he makes some catchy music, and ‘Sexy Back’ is one of those tracks where you can’t help but sing along and pout. Now, you might not be pouting when listening to 9 o’clock Nasty’s version but you are definitely bopping your head and singing along in the sexiest way possible. Reminiscent of Marilyn Manson’s ‘Tainted Love’, 9 o’clock Nasty have transformed the pop song into an intoxicating four minutes of music.

Instead of beats and synths with Timberlake’s contemporary pop vocals, 9 o’clock Nasty slither into your ear, reverberate around your cranium and swagger down your spine with the new track. Instead of smooth bubblegum pink sounds, they use gruff vocals to execute a super-sexy grittiness throughout the single. It appears these lads are definitely bringing sexy back with their renovation of ‘Sexy Back’.
