Lying somewhere in the realm of indie-folk, Boyd can be likened to old-school acts like Crosby, Stills and Nash; however, he inserts a contemporary twinge making me think of Tom Odell. As with most of his work, ‘The Mighty Oak’ has a soft, soothing sound pushing you into a calm swirl of music. Beautiful in its simplicity, the harmonic instrumentation offers a languid quality in the mellow ambience. Yet, while the track has a chilled vibe when it comes to melody, its true poignancy is heard in the poetic lyricism.
It’s true that many folk songs are filled with intimate and significant meanings, and this is no different for Robbie Boyd. Touching on the issue of hopefulness, courage and empowerment, ‘The Mighty Oak’ connects with listeners on an intimate and personal level. In a time of uncertainty and isolation, it is good to rediscover your inner strength helping you overcome today’s difficult reality – just like a mighty oak. Filled with nostalgic sentimentality and reflection, Boyd’s single shows that proverbial silver lining in a fragile tapestry of life.
