Track of the Day: Robbie Boyd – The Mighty Oak

Receiving coverage from notable press like BBC Radio 2, Absolute Radio, Huffington Post, Rolling Stone, Xfm and many more, Robbie Boyd has captured the attention of people across the globe. Along with the press, Boyd has received critical acclaim from Simon Cowell, Graham Norton and Dave Gorman. I should also mention that Boyd has performed at notable festivals, supported artists like The Kooks, Katie Melua and McFly on several continents, and even co-written with the legendary Ray Davis from The Kinks. Yep, he’s done all that and has no sign of slowing down. It is my pleasure to introduce you to the UK singer-songwriter with his single ‘The Mighty Oak’.

Lying somewhere in the realm of indie-folk, Boyd can be likened to old-school acts like Crosby, Stills and Nash; however, he inserts a contemporary twinge making me think of Tom Odell. As with most of his work, ‘The Mighty Oak’ has a soft, soothing sound pushing you into a calm swirl of music. Beautiful in its simplicity, the harmonic instrumentation offers a languid quality in the mellow ambience. Yet, while the track has a chilled vibe when it comes to melody, its true poignancy is heard in the poetic lyricism.

It’s true that many folk songs are filled with intimate and significant meanings, and this is no different for Robbie Boyd. Touching on the issue of hopefulness, courage and empowerment, ‘The Mighty Oak’ connects with listeners on an intimate and personal level. In a time of uncertainty and isolation, it is good to rediscover your inner strength helping you overcome today’s difficult reality – just like a mighty oak. Filled with nostalgic sentimentality and reflection, Boyd’s single shows that proverbial silver lining in a fragile tapestry of life.

In addition to the single, Robbie Boyd released an official music video for ‘The Mighty Oak’.
