Abby London – Bushes (2021)

With her single ‘Anxiety’, Abby London took us on an exploration of the human spirit through its intense and intimate tones. Using her astounding ability to capture emotions, she turns her attention to the less pleasant side of relationships in her single ‘Bushes’. A pop track that mixes harmonies with heavy tones, it takes us on a journey through hurt, anger, co-dependence and hopelessness.

As London fills our ears with the intricacies of her music, she delves into a relationship consisting of people who should not be together but can’t stay away from each other. There is something deeply relatable to the tale whether you have been in such a relationship or seen one before. A delightful follow-up to her last release, it carries the introspection of the last while turning it into the two sides of this common tale.

‘Bushes’ draws you in with a warble and pulse of electronic tones. There is an almost retro video game vibe to the melody that claps and bounces into a really catchy melodic movement. The arrangement of the music has you bopping down a neon soundscape that is packed with some good vibes that have an undertone of something sadder. The video game tones really hit later in the track to mark the transition from the female perspective to the male one. This is a great melodic device that is combined with the change in the vocals to really bring the two sides of the tale to life.

As you are drawn into the electronic pulses of the track, London’s vocals are smooth and soft. There is a bright pop vibe to her voice that merges so perfectly with the melody. The light ad bright feeling is a little at odds with the lyrics of the track. Through the verses, she highlights how each person in the relationship really feels which is tinged with the yearning for the relationship to work and the hopelessness of not knowing what to do. When the video game tones hit harder, the vocals take a rap turn which is an amazing burst to the track. It also showcases the musicality London has to offer. The rap moves back to the melodic flow which hits even harder and is packed to the brim with emotions.

Abby London has you swaying to the vibe of her music while packing your veins with a multitude of emotions with ‘Bushes’. The single brings a burst of electronic pop mixed with video game sounds that have you riding the neon melodics. Her vocals are poignant as they bring the struggle of the narrative to life with a swing in the arrangement to help the emotions and turmoil hit home.
