Aaron Spencer – Fire Inside (2021)

Described by Tongue Tied Magazine as a musician who “…brings his own spin on indie-rock”, UK-based Aaron Spencer is crafting a new breed of indie-rock in the modern-day music scene. Influenced by The Strokes, there is a hard-hitting rawness to his sound but there is a Spencer flair making him quite a rising star. Featured on Nexus Music Blog, Clout, Reyt Good Magazine (RGM), Indie Buddie and various playlists, Aaron Spencer is gaining traction on an international level. Despite his young years and only forming in 2020, Spencer is effortlessly capturing the heart of listeners with his singles. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed repertoire is ‘Fire Inside’.

Following his single ‘Incredible’, ‘Fire Inside’ is pure indie-rock with the brash vocals, pounding drums and dynamic guitars coming together in a powerful melody. While the song has a flowing melodic arrangement, it incorporates elements of The Strokes with a distortion in the track. Alright, perhaps distortion is not the correct word; let’s try abruptness making you pay attention to his hard-hitting song. Flowing abruptness? You’d have to have a listen to hear what I’m suggesting.

The melody is intriguing, but it is the lyricism and meaning that I look for – put it down to my constant overanalysing everything. The result of introspection during the Covid-19 lockdowns, ‘Fire Inside’ is a sonic representation of anxiety, insecurity, isolation and inner turmoil. Spencer explains that ‘Fire Inside’ is a letter to his younger self touching on personal issues. He shares that “the world stopped and my usual inspiration of going out, getting drum and misadventures wasn’t there. I had to look inwards, as a result, it’s my most raw and honest song. It was the first time I’ve had a chance to reflect on childhood trauma and how it shaped who I am today.”

‘Fire Inside’ can tap into your emotions and Spencer does connect on a deeper level; however, the depth is truly seen in the significance of the song. A melancholic and nostalgic track, there is a sense of desperate reflection, but this is not all. Adding a twist to the contemplative tune, ‘Fire Inside’ has a sense of empowerment, understanding and hopefulness in its sentimentality. A tribute to all people who choose to see the positive learning experiences and not embrace victimisation in previous traumas, ‘Fire Inside’ is anthemic and kaleidoscopic.
