Sister Teeth – Feel Right (2021)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Halie Alexander, Sister Teeth combines elements of indie-pop, dream-pop and alternative pop in her unique sound. Influenced by the likes of Lorde, The 1975 and Bleachers, Alexander aims to “…create diverse experimental indie-pop hits.” Receiving critical acclaim from Talk About Pop Music, YMX and several online radio stations/playlists, the US-based artist is building a following on a global scale. The latest addition to her growing discography is the single ‘feel right’.
Recorded in Southern California with Bobby Crane, ‘feel right’ has a melodic flow to the exquisite arrangement. Using a minimalist approach, the synth-based single is layered with a gruff, almost indie-pop vocal design. Despite the simplistic and almost non-existent instrumentation, there is a powerful melody that is evocative and provocative. It might be this eclecticism that showcases the true innovativeness of not only Sister Teeth but Bobby Crane as well.
The sonic representation of a new generation, Sister Teeth touches on the almost necessary topic of social media. After taking a short break from social media, the songstress described her mental and emotional state as being “…infinitely lighter” and was able to take a deeper look into this online phenomenon. Oddly enough, while ‘feel right’ seems an upbeat track there is a juxtaposition with the frustrating, desperate and obsessive lyrical message. Sister Teeth shares that ‘feel right’ is an exposition of what social media really is to her, “…something shiny and happy masking something a lot less pretty.”
Anthemic, addictive and infectious, listening to ‘feel right’ is like falling into a whirlpool of kaleidoscopic sound. The cinematic soundscape emphasises the poignancy and obscurity of the single. It’s a rather complicated song despite its nihilistic appearance and I can definitely have this on repeat all day long. I’m not very much into electropop but ‘feel right’ may have brought me around to the genre.
