Hollows – You’re Fine (2021)

There are certain things that we all want out of life and they can sometimes be a little out of reach. This is something that Hollows understands and tempers with the understanding that what you currently have is okay in ‘You’re Fine’. Through the single, they encourage listeners to be proud of what they have achieved whether it is big or small.

The four-piece alternative band formed in early 2017 and soon after released their debut single. While some of the original band members have moved onto other projects, the band continues with founder Sean Davies (vocals, guitar), Dan Dyson (drum), Jack Barnes (bass) and Liam Lewis (guitar). In the last 18 months, they have taken the time offered by the pandemic and created new material expanding their discography.

‘You’re Fine’ opens with a moving melody that is equal parts soaring and grounding. The guitars float through your mind while the drums beat against your chest. The dual vibes of the melody are wonderful as it perfectly captures the underlying messaging of the track. As the guitars reach out for something further the drums keep you grounded and appreciating the here and now. The flow of the music elevates the vocals that call out over the melody and rides the edge of anthemic.

Davies’ vocals are flowing with just a touch of gruffness that adds a scratch to the back of your mind. His performance pulls you into the story of the lyrics that describe someone who is happy with what he has achieved. There is a musing about what the main character of the track thinks at times which is relatable. Throughout the single, the band weaves an acceptance of yourself into the performance that leaves you feeling good by the end of the rack.

Hollows fill you with a sense of self-acceptance and understanding of your own achievements in ‘You’re Fine’. With a moving melody, they pull you into the contemplations of the lyrics. The vocals bring a touch of roughness to the track while making you feel better about yourself.
