Track of the Day: Alex Ohm – Joy
Already a renowned name on the local music scene, Alex Ohm has dazzled audiences with his engaging performances and unique music across the UK. Opening for the likes of Ocean Colour Scene, Pete Doherty, Ian Brown and The Charlatans isn’t too shabby and really looks good on a CV, however, it is Ohm’s eclectic sound that makes him stand out. Featured on Indie Music Center, Rising Artists Blog, Sinusoidal Music, Roadie Music, Amazing Radio and various playlists, the Midlands-based singer-songwriter is reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to his discography is ‘Joy’.
Following the release of their critically acclaimed EP The Lost Persons Meeting Point (read our review here), ‘Joy’ is upbeat and jovial with a cheery summertime vibe. Penned during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, the track is a result of being locked inside in an uncertain time. Yet, while there is a melancholic element to songs reflective of the pandemic lockdown, ‘Joy’ is not one of these. Instead of reflecting on bad things, ‘Joy’ takes an empowering perspective focusing on “the light at the end of the tunnel”. In fact, Ohm shares that ‘Joy’ is “…the happiest song I’ve ever written! I usually tend to write with some sort of underlying cynicism, but this is a real feel-good song.”
Recorded at RML Studios in Wolverhampton, ‘Joy’ combines the skills of Ste Ashford (guitar), Hannah Maiden (bass), Ryan Pinson (drums) and, of course, Ohm on vocals. An interesting melodic arrangement, there is a smoothness to the tune but also a vibrant buoyancy that certainly gets you tapping your toe. Unbelievably infectious, the band places chilled vibes within this kaleidoscopic soundscape.
Yes, yes, the toe-tapping melody adds to the infectiousness of ‘Joy’ but Ohm’s charming vocals are the cherry on the top. Warm, bright and rich, his dulcet tones capture you in a warm hug as he touches on the good side of tomorrow. He wants you to feel good and you definitely will.
As I review this single, I realise one vitally important thing. The elegance and sophistication of ‘Joy’ are beyond words. This is a “feel song” and its power is better felt through listening to the music than reading about it. I suggest you listen to it.
