Andrea – Betting On You (2021)

Born on Valentine’s Day just over 20 years ago, Andrea was a ray of light from the beginning. Alright, she might have not been a ray of light but I’m going on the personality shining from her music. Exposed to gospel, soul and R&B in her formative years, Andrea acquired a soulful approach to music that would follow her into adulthood. Featured on radio stations and blogs across the globe, the Macedonian singer-songwriter is building an international following. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Betting On You’.

Following her upbeat dance-influenced single ‘Talk To Me’, ‘Betting On You’ adopts a more modern pop design. Reminiscent of Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa, Andrea’s rich vocals once again ensnare my senses (check out my review of ‘I Know‘). Harmonically blending with dynamic synths, interspersed guitar riffs and underlying drums, the single has a toe-tapping feel wrapped in chilled vibes. Moreover, while there is a soulful hint to her voice she does not lose the “bopping beat” of the flowing melody.

Touching on the overall concept of love and relationships, ‘Betting On You’ is a brutally honest track exploring both the joy of a new romance but also the challenging risks of “jumping in”. Andrea describes ‘Betting On You as “…making an unexpected connection with someone and choosing to dive in without really knowing how it will develop.” I find this particularly interesting as the joviality of the melody is juxtaposed by anxiety showcasing innovativeness and depth.

So, what can I say about this young songstress? Anthemic with a sophisticated flair, Andrea finds the delicate line between naive happiness and mature reflection. Andrea continues to surprise me and I cannot wait for more from her.
