LONGLIGHT – Alara (2021)

Described by Odd Nugget as “an incredibly chill trip through cityscapes and warm, wrought iron sounds”, LONGLIGHT is a unique, genre-bending swirl of sound. Previously performing as Beautiful Thing, the duo has a reputation for soaring vocals, engaging melodies and captivating performances. With approximately five years of experience working together, Jo Williams and Lucas Polo have embraced the music world (or perhaps the scene embraced them) working with notable producers, touring internationally and featured on several radio stations, including Amazing Radio. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Alara’.

Penned “under lamplight at the infamous Buffalo Studios in London”, the duo teamed up with producer Danny Allin for this sophomore single. During a period when the pair were recording non-stop, slipping and the studio floor and surviving on cereal, the process became a personification of devotion to music. The result of this devoted time, including collaborations with various band members, is five contrasting singles due for release before the end of summer 2021.

Alright, so now we know the dedication of production but what is ‘Alara’ actually about? Following their critically acclaimed debut single ‘Choppy Waters’ (read our review here), ‘Alara’ has a more languid alternative rock-influenced style. Beautifully textured, the single has a soothing ambience with a strong guitar-driven approach, but that doesn’t overshadow the underlying synths with steady drumbeats. Simplistic in its instrumentation, there is a charming ambience taking you along a steady river of music.

While the melodic arrangement is soothing with a hint of soul, Williams once again transforms its style with his dulcet tones. As if embracing the melody, his vocals both stand out and meld with the instrumentation. Definitely a contrast from the upbeat ‘Choppy Water’, LONGLIGHT demonstrate innovativeness and versatility in the new song.
