Mothé – Dancing on an Empty Floor (2021)

Mothé brings a unique melodic arrangement to our ears with ‘Dancing on an Empty Floor’. Merging orchestral sounds with the buzz of synths, they have you moving to retro tones with a modern twist. If you are in the mood for a single that effortlessly brings the old to new life while mixing up styles, this is the one for you.

The mixing of tones comes from duo Spencer Fort and Luke Gonzalez. The duo used to be in a band called Moth Wings which split in 2019. After moving from Texas to LA, they changed their band name and started creating music during lockdown. While they have not had the chance to perform live as a twosome, the band is planning a national tour.

‘Dancing on an Empty Floor’ vibrates through you with a deep buzz of tones in the opening. This is joined by a retro higher layer that brings a touch of synth-pop to the melody. There is a lot going on in the melody as the layers warble through the soundscape on their own. While each layer is distinct, they all come together to form a really engaging melody that has you moving to it. The ebb and flow of the tones build and recede in the best way to get you to the chorus.

While the melody has a touch of retro vibes, the vocals are all modern sensibilities. The performance is so engaging that you get lost in the story of the single while easily picturing everything. The lyrics are a wonderful story of escalating situations and moving on. Later in the track, the vocals are washed with floating vibes that bring some of those vibes that were missing. The catchiness of the chorus will have you singing along with it before the single is over.

Mothé has you moving to their mixed musical style while the engaging lyrics tell a wonderful story in ‘Dancing on an Empty Floor’. The melody buzzes through your senses while the layers go off on their own before coming together for a solid musical thread. While the melody has retro vibes, the vocals are all modern sensibilities that bring life to the story of the lyrics.
