Sky Is Alright – Indigo Moon (2021)

Building on the success of their debut single, Sky Is Alright is back with their follow-up ‘Indigo Moon’. Fusing dream pop with alternative rock and some shoegaze sensibilities, the band has you riding a progressive soundscape. With a foundation of heavy tones topped with ethereal vocals, the band is creating a distinctive sound that balance floating away and staying grounded.

This balance comes from duo Rishi Neal Arora and Christopher Gregory. The band started in 2018 when Arora began writing songs to escape the despair in the world around him. Realising they needed a percussion foundation, he contacted his high-school friend Gregory and the rest is history. While this single was written remotely, the duo recorded it in LA in 2020 along with other tracks that make up their debut LP.

‘Indigo Moon’ has a gentle late-night feeling to the opening. The tender tones of the guitar fill you with the stillness of the middle of the night when the world is silent and you can enjoy the darkness. This gives way for the deep drumline and calling guitars that beckon you out into the world. While the stillness of the night is broken, the instrumentation is like damp grass under bare feet as you take in the chill of the air. The late-night feeling remains throughout the single but there is a change in your understanding of it. All of this is wrapped in a vastness as the music stretches out before you in an endless rolling landscape.

Resting over this moving melody are the floating vocals. There is a breathiness to the vocal performance that is like a gentle breeze ruffling your hair as you take in the beauty of a nighttime landscape lit only by the moon. Later in the track, there is a spoken word section to the vocals that brings a new dimension to the single as the melody build beneath it. This segment of the single has an almost cosmic feeling like words are transmitted from outer space.

Sky Is Alright beckons you out onto a dew-damp landscape on a moonlit night through the vast and floating movements of ‘Indigo Moon’. The melody seems to stretch into the distance while leaving you with a peaceful feeling. The vocals float over the melody like mist in the early morning.
