Eddie Cohn – Animals (2021)

Having already graced our e-pages, I am pleased to announce that Eddie Cohn has another single for our perusal. Lying somewhere between Pearl Jam and Beck, Cohn fuses classic sounds with contemporary creating a rather unique sound. His song ‘Freedom’ attracted the attention of several notable press and he continues to impress with the new single ‘Animals’. Featured on Buzz-Music, Essentially Pop, XS Noize, Rawkus Magazine, Less Than 1000 Followers and Skope Mag (to name a few), the singer-songwriter is reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to his repertoire is the single ‘Animals’.

A veteran musician, Cohn has been on the scene for approximately 15 years releasing critically acclaimed material, performing at music festivals and impressing audiences in a US tour. Joined by Bruce Watson (guitars), Jake Reed (drums and percussion) and Phil Peters (cello), Cohn releases another controversial track in ‘Animals’. Inspired by the chaotic response to the George Floyd protests, ‘Animals’ showcases Cohn’s humanitarian side by touching on “the carnal and animalistic tendencies of human beings”.

What I find particularly intriguing about ‘Animals’ is the intimate connection one feels when listening to the track. An incorporation of heartbreaking strings alongside powerful lead guitars and drums adds really “cuts to the core” as a soothing element amidst alternative rock-driven instrumentation. It is this sonic representation of human fragility that illustrates Cohn’s maturity as a songwriter and artist.

Interwoven into the swirl of sound, Cohn’s rich vocals infuse the flowing harmonies with a nostalgic and mournful tone. Lyrically, ‘Animals’ touches on the controversial “animalistic tendencies” and our “carnal” essence; however, a pang of sadness is heard in Cohn’s voice pouring forth a melancholic acceptance of human nature.

In addition to his single, Eddie Cohn released an official music video for ‘Animals’. As I have photosensitive epilepsy I was unable to view the video in its entirety because of rapid image transitions and certain lighting effects. What I can glean from the parts I was able to view, I find the video adds a sensational visual element to the sophisticated song. Simplistic in nature featuring Cohn singing in different locations, the video enhances that intimate connection with the audience. Highly engaging and thoughtful, I felt as if Cohn was sharing a visual story with me. I, unfortunately, could not continue viewing the video but am so happy with what I was able to see.
