Track of the Day: Paola Bennet – My Mother Says

Having already crossed our virtual desk before, Paola Bennet is no stranger to The Other Side Reviews (read our review of ‘In This Body’). Examining the fragility of human essence in her music, the US-based singer-songwriter connects with listeners on a deeper level…and we’re not the only ones impressed by her work. Her work has featured in several music blogs, on online radio stations/playlists and was called “spine-chilling” by Last Day Deaf. From America’s American Pancake to the UK’s FV Music Blog, Bennet has been capturing audiences on an international scale since 2017. Today we feature her single ‘My Mother Says’ as our Track of the Day.

The first track on her latest EP Maybe The Light, ‘My Mother Says’ is an acoustic-inspired surge of intimacy. Showing us her vulnerable side, Bennet explores elements of poor mental health, isolation and anxiety. Yet, amidst the melancholic lyricism, there is a spark of joy as a means of escapism. Bennet explains that “the song isn’t hopeful per se, but its frustration is cathartic. When you’re at the bottom of that mental well, there’s still a part of you that wants to change…that part knows being more vulnerable can be good but it’s hard to even begin.”

As with ‘In This Body’, Bennet showcases her versatility as an artist. Not only does she adopt a more ethereal sound in ‘My Mother Says’, but the tune traverses several genres proving that she is not to be pigeon-holed. Known for her haunting vocals, the track has a certain ethereal quality; however, the incorporation of pop-rock adds joviality to the single. The movement from a folk-inspired ballad to an upbeat rock song is intriguing as a soundscape but also is a sonic representation of diverse human emotions.

Blending the intimacy of Joni Mitchell with the intensity of Alanis Morrissette, although without the Morrissette’s obscure vocal lilt, Bennet is a force to be reckoned with. Strong crescendos swell into guitar-driven choruses with addictive and thoughtful lyricism. While all of this is addictive in itself, it is Bennet’s rich vocal that sells the song. Robust and warm, her dulcet tones give a quality of empathy; however, there is a lingering otherworldliness making it a treat for the ears and soul.
