Honey&Eve – I Speak Through Storms (Night Drive Version) (2021)

Describing their music as “dark-pop”, the Berlin-based duo blend elements of alternative pop and electropop with underlying R&B. Nodding to contemporary pop sounds, vocalist Hannah and multi-instrumentalist Alex are breeding a new brand of, well, it’s difficult to define their sound. Formed in 2020, at least that is when they began streaming singles on Spotify, Honey&Eve are a relatively new band; however, they are reaching audiences on an international level gaining a reputation for engaging and provocative music. Featured on It’s All Indie, Roadie Music, YMX, Musik Blog, Amazing Radio and several other publications/radio stations, Honey&Eve show they are not to be ignored. We have the honour of reviewing their single ‘I Speak Through Storms (Night Drive Version)’.

2020 was a year of uncertainty and stagnation for many people, but Honey&Eve spent their time at Berlin’s Sonic Boom Studios writing and recording various remixes of ‘I Speak Through Storms’. A moving single, ‘I Speak Through Storms’ incorporates the obscurity of Billie Eilish with the urgency of Dresden Dolls wrapped in a haunting Lorde package. With the dark ambience, Hannah layers enigmatic vocals atop the spine-chilling instrumentation resulting in a hypnotic soundscape. So, how do you improve on this soul-stirring version? Make a remix version, of course.

Taken from their I Speak Through Storms (Remixed) EP, ‘I Speak Through Storms (Night Drive Version) showcases the duo’s versatility as artists. Building on the spine-chilling sensation, Hannah’s vocals enhance the get-wrenching effect of the single. Yet, there is a movement from the hushed hopelessness to a more dynamic rock-inspired style. Leaning toward a melodic metal sound, Alex’s guitars and drums add a forceful heaviness to the song. The instrumentation is not the only heavier element as Hannah moves from a wistful hushed tone to one reminiscent of Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale.

Not afraid to expose the grittiness of reality, ‘I Speak Through Storms’ looks at the conceptual toxic relationship between nature and humanity in today’s climate. Based on their personal experiences, the duo fills their music with raw honesty and this single is no different. While Alex’s instrumentation increases a sense of desperation, Hannah adds a lingering painful forlornness to the introspective song.
