Leo Kelly-Gee & Matt Ginno – Free (2021)

There are a lot of people who want to break free of their mundane existence and experience life to the fullest. This longing has been picked up by Leo Kelly-Gee and Matt Ginno in their single ‘Free’. Drawing on the freedom of the open road or taking to the ocean, it has you soaring into the sky and letting everything tying you down fall away.

The pair first met at UCL in London before pursuing their own musical careers after graduation. When lockdown hit, they decided to time was right to co-write something and this single came to life. Combining melodic guitar work with evocative lyrics and clear vocals, they have you yearning for an escape and the ability to live life to the fullest.

‘Free’ pulls you in with a rolling melodic line that sets you on a soaring vibe. The flow of the melody makes you think of the open road or the ocean reaching back onto the horizon. There is a really soothing feeling to the music that is lightly layered with a touch of melancholy. As you ride the movement of the guitar-driven melody, you really feel the yearning for escape. There is something visceral that grips your heart and squeezes as you yearn to find that spark that lets you live life to its fullest.

As the melody fills you with longing, the vocals straddle the line between the soaring happiness of freedom and the bone-deep longing for it. Ginno’s vocals softly peak over the melody in the first verse as he beckons you to the open road. Through his performance, you can feel the nip of cold in the air as you fly down the open road as the sun rises. Kelly-Gee takes over from him pulling you toward the ocean and the great unknown of the open waters. His vocal performance is all salty ocean winds and the breeze ruffling your hair as it comes off the water. When they come together for the chorus, they really send you soaring to a point where all your worries disappear.

Leo Kelly-Gee and Matt Ginno have you filled with a yearning for freedom while helping you shrug off your worries in ‘Free’. The guitar-driven melody has a touch of melancholy that enhances the yearning of the single. The vocals performances are amazing as they paint clear pictures of longing in your mind before soaring into the air where your worries are unable to grab onto you.
