Mike Robert – Cold (2021)

There are times when you feel cold inside like your emotions have been hollowed out and you are left feeling numb. Mike Robert has taken these moments and woven them into the aptly titled single ‘Cold’. Through the single, he considers those moments when you feel unable to get excited about life or feel the warm glow of love.

As part of his upcoming concept album, the single fills you with the sensation of being trapped in cold water without any way to escape. Drawing on experience, he turned the unexpected happenings of the last year into a time to grow and learn in order to create a full album. Returning to making music, he addresses the feelings many of us have while letting us know that we are not alone in feeling this way.

‘Cold’ has a delightfully folky acoustic guitar opening that strums against your ears. This is met by a toe-tapping beat that has you moving to its rhythm while adding a touch of rock-pop to the song. There is a really infectious feeling to the music as it brings an almost upbeat vibe to your brain. This is a little at odds with the lyrics, but the contrast really enhances the messaging of the track. The upbeat melody is like the face we present to everyone around us while the lyrics detail everything we feel inside and never let others see.

The duality of the melody and lyrics continues with Robert’s vocals. His performance shines in the light of the music for a really good vibe. However, as you really listen to the lyrics you start to get the feeling that there is a lot more under the surface. This comes through in the latter part of the chorus where the energetic vibes taper off to something more sombre. As the song continues, his voice gets a hint of frustration at the coldness inside while being entirely too catchy for its own good.

Mike Robert captivates you with energetic music and bouncing vibes only to splash your soul with ice water in ‘Cold’. The catchy vocals match the bouncing melody that has you vibing to the rhythm. This is at odds with the lyrics that detail a coldness inside that seems to never want to leave.
