Nick Marcus – Falling (2020)

Relationships can be a tricky affair with one person feeling more deeply than the other. The moment of being at different stages in the same relationship has been taken by Nick Marcus and turned into his single ‘Falling’. The ballad draws on feelings of heartbreak and the realisation that you feel more deeply for someone than they feel about you.

Drawing on years of piano and vocals lessons, Marcus weaves a tale of love, heartbreak and rocky realisations. The single continues his desire to create music that transports listeners either to their feet or back in time. With a touch of RnB added to some solid pop sensibilities, he has you thinking about unrequited love and falling too deeply.

‘Falling’ lures you in with a false sense of the melody using an opening that is all rolling gentleness. As the vocals hit, the melody gets these thumping beats that pound against your ears. While the gentle tones of the opening carry on in the background, those beats are what propel you through the soundscape. On the chorus, there is a humming feeling to the music as you are bounced on thrusting tones. The organic tones that patter in the higher levels are a wonderful grounding influence that stop the beats from sending you flying too far.

Against the pounding of the beats, Marcus’ vocals are a smooth slide. Through the verses, he fills you with a realisation that the relationship is not going as you first imagined. There is a heartbreaking sadness in his performance that becomes more pain-filled when the chorus hits. You can hear the emotion clogging his throat on the chorus as he pleads for the other person to reciprocate his feelings. As the song progresses, he acknowledges that they were moving at different speeds but this does nothing to lessen the utter pain laced into the song.

Nick Marcus propels you through the soundscape with intense, vibrating beats as his vocals fill you with the pain of unrequited love in ‘Falling’. Each step of the single fills you with a painful realisation and heartfelt plea of someone who has fallen deeper in love than they should have. The pounding beats drive the emotion of the lyrics into your chest while his performance tears at your heart.
