The Sea Suns – Lighter (2021)

Becoming a better version of yourself is something that a lot of people strive for but it can be a difficult journey. The Sea Suns are exploring this endless journey through the electronic tones of ‘Lighter’. A lush wonderland of paths to tread, the single winds its way through a dreamy soundscape that offers an expansive punch.

While walking down a rather deep path, the single continues the feel-good vibes the band is becoming known for. To achieve these vibes, Will Evans and Marina Bennett combine their unique musical backgrounds and voices for an authentic sound. The dynamic duo layer danceable beats over lyrics with a heavy emotional punch to great effect.

‘Lighter’ has you moving to the pulsing tones of the melody before you realise what has happened. There is an interesting interplay of darkness and light in the melody. Almost ominous synth tones swirl around your ankles in the lower levels of the track only for the bright pulses to send them scattering away. It is like those pulses are lights that illuminate the path you need to take through the gloom of the lower levels. The synths play off each other with a mastery that is exquisite to hear and has you completely captivated.

As the synths light your way, the vocals hang over you like a dreamy fog. The echoes to the vocals enhance the contrasting gloom and light of the melody as they beckon you ever forward. Evans and Bennett meld their vocals for a layered performance that has you really thinking about the lyrics. There is a hint of the journey you are on in the lyrics but this has been handled with an outstanding delicacy. They turn your attention where it needs to be without actively calling out to you which helps you reach the right conclusion on your own.

The Sea Suns use an interplay of melodic elements and fusion vocals to explore the endless journey of bettering yourself in ‘Lighter’. The synths pulse with both darkness and light as they show you the path you should take. The fused vocals add a dreaminess to the soundscape while subtle nudging you in the right direction.
