Charlotte Hall – Apathy (2021)

Influenced by artists like Blondie, T Rex, The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac, Charlotte Hall merges jangly-pop joviality with heartfelt otherworldliness. Trained as a classical soprano during university, Hall exudes elegance with both a clear eloquence and hazy ambience. Featured on YMX Music Blog, Turtle Tempo, iHeart Radio and BBC Introducing (to name but a few), this UK-based singer-songwriter is turning heads on an international scale. The latest addition to her well-received discography is the single ‘Apathy’.

Following her critically acclaimed single ‘The Wolves’ (read our review here), ‘Apathy’ embraces a folk-rock lead with undertones of commercial pop. Reminiscent of Faith Hill, Sixpence None The Richer and LeAnn Rimes, Hall uses heartwarming melodies to place a silly grin on your face; however, the desperate lyrical content is in juxtaposition to the jovial melody. It’s like sugarcoating serious messages with lots of brightly coloured sprinkles…you want it but aren’t sure if it’s good for you.

In line with the song’s title, ‘Apathy’ touches on the monotonous routine people face in their daily lives. According to Charlotte Hall, “‘Apathy’ is a song about wanting to get out of a comfort zone to start making the most of life.” Hailing from a rather small UK town, Hall knew at a young age she did not want to settle down and “be a part of that” – she looked at life as a journey instead of a destination and this is what ‘Apathy’ alludes to. The personal narrative is her way of identifying the tragedy of routine existence and wanting to make a change.

Yes, the melody does have an upbeat, buoyant feel, but it is Hall’s clear soprano that sends shivers down your spine. An intricate tapestry of sound, ‘Apathy’ has a reflective aspect with melancholic lyricism; however, there is a sense of optimism and hopefulness within the sincere content. I cannot wait to hear more from this ever-evolving artist.
