Musha – Fragments (2021)

There are parts of ourselves that we often lose connection with for many reasons. Through her EP Fragments, Musha searches for these parts and makes a connection while looking for her place in the world. With tracks that have been worked on over the last few years, she embraces all parts of herself while considering the importance of accepting who you are.

When listening to the songs, they might seem unconnected at first, but the personal journey does shine through. Using ethereal and atmospheric tones, she takes you on an inner journey of discovery and fills you with the acceptance you might need. While deeply personal, the journey is one that touches everyone and helps you find the strength you need to be who you really are.

The EP opens with ‘Used To’ which is a wonderful start to the exploration of the EP. It is also a great introduction to her sound with ethereal backing and airy vocals. There is a drifting mistiness to the song that makes you feel like you are suspended in a moment. The deeper tones creep up and sit behind you before the melodic beats have your head moving. The combination of electronic tones and that ethereal soundscape is wonderful and a perfect sonic representation of the space you rest in as you search for connections within.

‘Better Chances’ draws you in with a stripped-back opening that progressively grows in volume. The tapping beats that rumble from the depths turn into a very groovy foundation for the track. There is a brighter sense to this song as you are filled with the feeling of things getting better. The vocals have a lot of hope infused into them while the melody fills you with some optimistic vibes. The lyrics let you know that things can get better and that you need to push through for them with hope in your heart.

The vocal opening of ‘Every Time’ has a rather haunting feeling to it. This merges with the atmospherics of the music that come at you from all sides. Her vocals call clearly through the atmospheric soundscape and are layered on the chorus. This creates an overlapping of thoughts that wonderfully represents the emotions of the lyrics. There is a feeling of importance in this song like it might just be a turning point in the journey you are on.

The EP comes to a close with ‘Distant Lights’ which loses a lot of the haziness that the rest of the EP is soaked in. The atmospherics are more grounded while the music creates lights breaking through the twilight of the soundscape. The layers of melodics come together to enhance the emotional impact of the vocals. Musha’s voice has an earthier feeling on this track while the harmonisations attempt to pull you into an ethereal space. This is an amazing song and the perfect way to bring the journey of the EP to an end.

Musha takes you on a journey of internal connections and discovery through the tracks of Fragments. Each song is like a snapshot on a journey to find yourself and your place in the world packed with atmospheric sounds and ethereal vocals. This comes to a close with a more grounded feeling like a return to reality and acceptance of who you are.
