Track of the Day: Canek – You and Him

With a fondness for contemporary pop and classical training, singer-songwriter Canek is breeding a unique style. Of Franco-Mexican descent, but a strong flow of French influence, Canek performed with the Les Chanteurs du Lycée school choir, is part of the baroque duo Anima Anticua and performed in several plays including The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Exploding onto the scene in 2021 with his classical meets contemporary sound, the talented artist released two well-received singles – ‘You and Him’ and ‘Days’. We’ll take a gander at ‘You and Him’.

A debut single and the first from his upcoming EP Lamento, ‘You and Him’ is an intertwining of classical and pop. I am unsure why, but the track gave me goosebumps from the outset. Perhaps it is the harmonic melding of delicate vocals, intimate piano and a soothing string section. Perhaps it is the perfect execution of poetic lyricism. Perhaps it is the vulnerability and fragility of the tune itself. Whatever it is, I find myself falling into a glassy lake of smooth sound.

Depth is not only seen in the intriguing melody, but the lyricism also shows a poignancy in Canek’s music. Using a personal narrative, we are led into a vulnerable, brooding and complex story filled with raw honesty. An exploration of the human soul’s fragility, Canek enhances the heartfelt poignancy with his distinct countertenor voice. Perhaps it is the vocals that captivate me from the beginning.

It is almost impossible to describe Canek, he is too eclectic, innovative and original for comparisons to be made. What I do know is ‘You and Him’ is reflective with a lingering melancholic ethereal vibe. If this first track is anything to go by, I can see great success for this naturally talented artist.
