Perry Ripley – The Storm (2021)

Perry Ripley is connecting with everyone who has ever struggled using the exploratory tones of ‘The Storm’. Through the single, he considers the passing thoughts of a person who is struggling with mental health problems and addiction. While he touches on the bad influences and hardships that we face in life, he brings us to an understanding that this is what makes us who we are.

Using raw and moody sounds, he offers a thought-provoking glance into his emotions. While drawing on his own experiences, the relatability of the journey he takes you through is amazing. The first track off his upcoming EP Cocaine Love, it toes the line between sultry electronic tones, indie pop and alternative rock.

‘The Storm’ uses a sombre piano line that is packed with emotion to hook you. Through the piano notes, you get a sense of hardship and struggle. The electronic tones that swish over the piano add a watery layer to the melody before the bass has your foot tapping to it. The beats that pick up with a touch of dance to them build before bursting into a shower of lights. There is a great rise and fall to the melodic arrangement that mimics the ebb and flow of struggling as the pressure of everything builds before exploding.

Ripley’s vocals are a raw layer of vulnerability wrapped around a pillar of strength. His voice has a gentle timbre that allows the emotions of his performance to shine. He moves between a variety of emotions through the rather poetic lyrics. He starts with a call for help that turns into an acknowledgement of his mental state before revealing the strength that hardships provide. Through his performance, he lets you know that you can get through the storm you face and will come out better for the experience.

Perry Ripley combines moody depth with raw vocals and light electronic tones to move you in the ebb and flow of ‘The Storm’. While the single acknowledges the struggles we face and the pressure this puts us under, it also brings an understanding of the strength fighting through provides. The music is multi-layered and enthralling while his vocals make you feel like you can get through the storm you face.
