Track of the Day: Sarpa Salpa – Another Life
Inspired by Foals, Friendly Fires and Two Door Cinema Club, Sarpa Salpa is the embodiment of contemporary indie-pop. Laying engaging lyrics atop high-energy melodies, the UK-based quintet can easily ensnare your senses. Forming in 2019, their music has received much attention from Radio X, BBC Radio 6, RGM, Mix It All Up and Earmilk. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed discography is ‘Another Life’.
Pre-empting the release of their upcoming sophomore EP A Feeling You Can’t Replace’, ‘Another Life’ is a “banger of a song”. Not entirely sure what a banger is, but the fact that I have the song on repeat must place it in this category. Bringing together elements of indie-pop with powerful indie-rock influences, ‘Another Life’ is smooth with a bit of an edge.
Slightly more pop than their previous ‘Stick To What You Know’, ‘Another Life’ is filled with bubblegum pink joviality. Thing is, while the track is buoyant, it has lyrical depth. Touching on aspects of devotion, addiction and irrational obsession in romantic relationships, ‘Another Life’ “tackles the idea of being completely head over heels with someone…however, despite the warning signs you cannot admit that your love is unrequited”.
Reminiscent of Maroon 5, but with originality to their sound, ‘Another Life’ is a juxtaposition of upbeat melodies and desperate lyricism. A harmonic mingling of dynamic instrumentation and Adam Levine-esque vocals makes ‘Another Life’ a kaleidoscopic sonic representation of obsession with a lingering sense of optimism.
