A Chat with Onism E (13.03.21)

Reminiscent of The Strokes, but with a kick of Joan Jett, Onism E is breeding a new type of indie-rock for the 21st century. With compelling lyricism and high-powered melodies, the US-based group forces you to pay attention to their unique sound. We speak with frontwoman Eline Chavez about the group’s new album Survivors, favourite meals and future plans.

OSR: What can you tell us about your new album Survivors?

Chavez: Well, it is the first album I’ve ever put out that was done 100% remotely which is pretty crazy.

OSR: Does it hold significance for any of you?

Chavez: Definitely. This is the first album I’ve put out with other musicians being musicians. I put out four other releases before this but it was just me. Their creative take on these songs was a breath of fresh air. They offer that colourful perspective that I thrive off of. I couldn’t have done it without them and I will be forever grateful.

What is your creative process?

Chavez: Randomness. ? Sometimes I sit at my drum kit and a beat will trigger something and sometimes I wake up with lyrics in my head. Life inspires me. It makes sense that it dictates when something sparks something for me.

OSR: Did you face any challenges when writing and recording the album?

Chavez: Yes! Lack of instant feedback. When you sit in a studio you constantly bounce ideas in real-time. We worked remotely which was a challenge in more ways than one.

OSR: If you could change one thing about Survivors what would it be?

Chavez: I could knit-pick at the entire album; I already have. ? Ultimately, it’s 2020 in a nutshell for me so I am proud of it and the guys.

OSR: How did you come up with the band name?

Chavez: The word Onism was introduced to me by a friend of mine. It describes me in many ways; that knowledge that I can only be in one place at one time. 2020 was a test in staying put.

OSR: What advice do you have for new artists?

Chavez: There is room in the industry for everyone with a vision and solid tunes. Carve out your piece and support the indie community around you. Be kind to each other; it always comes back around.

OSR: What are your thoughts regarding online collaboration between artists?

Chavez: We should all be experts and open to that now. I’m 100% about working with anyone that has something to say and a good melody. Bring it on!

OSR: What is your favourite smell?

Chavez: Bacon, but only when I leave the smell behind. Cooking it in my house is a rarity.

OSR: What is your favourite meal?

Chavez: Eggplant Parmesan.

OSR: Do you have any future plans?

Chavez: As soon as it is safe for the band and everyone around we will play as many shows as we can! We are looking forward to playing in front of people again.

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Chavez: Thank you. In a year of craziness you stuck around and supported indie music and kept us going. We are eternally grateful to all that have made sure indie music and musicians weren’t left behind.
