babybl.u – highs + lows (2021)

After experiencing success as the frontwoman of the UK indie group OH LA KANADA, babybl.u is embracing a solo career. Featured in various publications like Talk About Pop Music, Pop Muzik, Keep Walking Music and Chalkpit Records, babybl.u is already carving a name for herself across the globe. The debut single from this talented singer-songwriter is ‘highs + lows’.

Beginning as a demo recorded in her childhood home, the song developed into a hard-hitting explosion of pop. With elements of 80s synth-pop, babybl.u pulls the sounds of yesteryear into the 21st century. Adding electropop elements with an indie sound, the melody has a hazy ambience with moving instrumentation. While the melody can carry you along in a cascade of bright lights, it is babybl.u’s vocals that are truly beguiling.

Reminiscent of Stevie Nicks and Blondie with a dash of Lorde, babybl.u shows us why she gained success as the lead vocalist of OH LA KANADA. Touching on elements of isolation, fear and inner turmoil, ‘highs + lows’ is a sonic representation of toxic relationships – or rather the effects of these relationships.

The electronic soundscape builds a foundation for this difficult situation and babybl.u’s voice enhances the desperation of the protagonist. While the melody may be wistful, the depth of content makes you sit back and pay attention. A haunting track filled with surrealness, ‘highs + lows’ leaves lingering empowerment in the melancholic lyricism.
