Montrell – Simpler in the Dark (2021)

The desire to sleep with other people while in a relationship brings a moral dilemma with it. The dilemma that follows this urge is the basis of ‘Simpler in the Dark’ by Montrell. While the single was not intended to be one that everyone can connect to, the underlying emotions are relatable to most people.

The single is the second off the band’s upcoming Angel EP which is being released track by track. Since the band formed, they have been gaining followers and toured Europe twice in 2019. Primarily an indie-rock band, they mix some softer folk tones into their sound for a mesmerising look into emotions and situations.

‘Simpler in the Dark’ opens with smooth vocals filled with a sense of unease. The lyrics set out the feeling of desiring someone who is not your partner. There is a great storytelling quality to the lyrics but this is tempered by a more abstract flow to the lyricism. The vocal performance has a nuanced vibe as you are drawn into the emotions of the single. The unease of the opening continues to shine throughout the track as it meets a spiral into anxiety and a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. The harmonisations create an earthy depth to the track.

The acoustic guitar-driven melody has a raw feeling to it as it rests below the vocals. There is an almost lo-fi vibe to the melody that makes you think of the band playing it in a room to their friends. The intimacy of the music works well with the subject of the lyrics and enhances the emotional hit. Through a combination of the vocals and music, you are drawn into the feelings of the narrative even if you have never been in a similar position.

Montrell has you softly spiralling into a moral dilemma with the intimate and emotive ‘Simpler in the Dark’. The vocals draw you into the story of the lyrics while sliding the emotions of the track into your chest. The melody bolsters the impact of the vocals and lyrics while creating an intimate space.
