Ideas Into Action – Against My Country (2021)

In the aptly titled ‘Against My Country’, Italian-based melodic punk band Ideas Into Action are considering the anger you can have toward your own country. This reflection on anger is laced with the emotions of a quote the band often repeats that pride is not about nationality. With a blast of punk aggression mixed with some rock sensibilities, the band will have you riding the waves of anger and considering your own feelings toward your country.

Ema (vocals), Mirko (guitar, vocals), Matt (bass) and Allan (drums) draw on their multi-culturalism to shine a light on the negatives running rampant in society. Ema and Mirko came together to start the band in 2012 with Allan and Matt joining more recently. Together they take on nationalism and racism while getting you moving to their energetic sound.

The bass that opens ‘Against My Country’ thrums you into the electric guitar line that crashes against you. There is a jumping high-octane pace to the music that makes you want to vibrate out of your skin. At times, the music is reminiscent of early Sum 41 before tumbling you into something that is rather unique. The melodic line of the chorus will have you screaming out with the band. The melody is really catchy and will have you jumping to it, or at the very least bopping your head.

As the music fills you with vibrating energy, the vocals call out to your spirit and fill it with an aggressive energy. Ema’s performance is packed with a wonderful punk-rock shove that you can’t help but get caught up in. As the music on the chorus fills you with the band’s vibes, the vocals meet it to have you singing along at the top of your lungs. Later in the track, there is a smoother melodic line that slowly builds to a burst of punk-rock goodness.

While the music alone is more than capable of filling you with the energy of the band, the official music video just adds a little something extra to everything. Throughout the video, you swing between the band playing in a room with screens around them and images of major events in different countries. All the imagery has one thing in common and that is anger. You see people protesting, protestors being arrested and statues being torn down. The pulsing energy of the music is perfectly captured through this video while offering a real-life thread to relate to.

Ideas Into Action fill you with angry energy as they take on the negatives of society through their punk-rock single ‘Against My Country’. With crashing guitars and anthemic vocals, the band calls out to your spirit and makes you want to fight for freedom. If the single itself does not have you fighting against the establishment, the music video will with news snippets.
