Silas Armstrong – Liar (2021)

Deceit, heartbreak and denial have all been packed in ‘Liar’ by Silas Armstrong. Telling the story of a relationship breakdown, the single is a power-pop ballad infusing dark wave with electronic pop and the emotional hit of breakups. If the single on its own does not have you awash in dark emotions, the accompanying music video will bring the stark betrayal of the track to vivid life.

Drawing on an eclectic mix of influences from pop, hip-hop and rock with a nod to the energy of the 80s, he builds up a pulsing alternative pop sound. To his influences, Armstrong adds his rich wealth of experiences as a radio producer, band member and music manager. All of this comes together for a tapestry of emotion and personal experiences set to a captivating soundscape.



‘Liar’ vibrates to life with some deep thrumming pulses that shake your chest and insides. The pulsing beats continue to grab your attention as the single progresses while dark synths run over them. The patter of tones starts to dance over these beats for a light burst of power on the chorus. The melody has a catchy rhythm that you can’t help but get drawn into. Throughout the single, the melody is understated allowing the vocals to really shine.

Armstrong uses a wonderful storytelling lyrical structure that is vivid without being too detailed. Through his performance, you are drawn into the angst of the track and the call-out of the lyrics. His voice is smooth while laying out the state of the relationship before turning into a pulse of dark confrontation as he calls the other person out for the deceit and betrayal they caused. The chorus is unbelievably catchy and will have you calling out with Armstrong as you feel the pulse of anger at the lies that seeped into the relationship resulting in heartbreak.



As the single fills you with the anger of betrayal, the official music video uses a simple visual to bring the emotions to life. Shot in the empty streets of Soho during lockdown, you see Armstrong sing to the camera. The light bursts of sound are brought to visual life through a static that cuts through the visual. The relatively simple concept of the video enhances the emotional hit of the track as you can feel Armstrong being done with the problems of the relationship and simply leaving.

Silas Armstrong calls out lies and betrayal in a relationship while confronting the denial and heartbreak this creates in ‘Liar’. The single uses a pulsing melody to grab your attention before Armstrong’s smooth vocals paint the picture of the relationship and all its problems. The call-out on the chorus is catchy and will have you yelling out along with him. Using a simple visual, the official video brings the emotions of the single to vivid visual life.
