Luke Potter – What If I (2021)

Broken hearts are not an uncommon theme for music, but Luke Potter is taking this to the next level. With his single ‘What if I’, he fills you with heartbreak and the sinking sensation of realising the happy ever after you were anticipating will never happen. Packed with his own raw emotion, the single is like an emotional snapshot in time before you have a chance to move on.

Potter approaches music like writing letters to himself, letting go of all the emotions resting in his chest and infusing them into each musical note. The emotional authenticity of this single shine in the vocals which were recorded soon after his own breakup and loss of an anticipated future.

The piano opening of ‘What If I’ sets the sad tone of this heartbroken single. The acoustic melody has a breaking melancholy that sits in your throat to close it with the emotions of the track. The simple beauty of the piano captures the feeling of the track in the best possible way. There is no way that the music on its own will not bring a welling of emotion. You can easily imagine Potter sitting at the piano and pouring his heart out with the cracking heartbreak of loss. Later in the track, there is a swell of depth to the melody with strings washing over the piano like the dam of emotion bursting.

While the music can leave you a blubbering mess of emotion, Potter’s vocals take everything to a new level. You can hear the pain in each word as he pours agony into every syllable. There is a touching tenderness to his performance steeped in the misery of heartbreak. While packed with sadness, there is a sense of hope later in the track that glitters in the distance. This is the idea that you could move on even if it seems impossible at the time.

Luke Potter transports you to a moment of heartbreak with the welling emotions of ‘What if I’. The single uses a simple melody and heartfelt vocals to set the misery and ache of love lost deep in your chest. Taking heartbreak songs to a new level, the single will leave you a mess of emotions.
