Storm: Season – My Lover’s (2021)

Storm: Season are defying categorisation with their debut single ‘My Lover’s’. With a touch of indie rock wrapped in lo-fi vibes with a splash of electronic pop, the band is hitting out with their unique sound. Using a fusion of all the best elements of music, they express themselves freely through their music and take you along for the ride.

With the pandemic bringing live music to a halt, Martyn Nicholson and Calvert Stephen got together to remotely take care of their creative urges. It didn’t take them long to team up with Will Troman to create the band once they realised what they were onto. Together, the trio advocates for positive mental wellbeing through talking about feelings and being open. This is a message they look to convey through their music and their debut is an excellent start.

The warping and distortion of the synths in the opening draw you into ‘My Lover’s’ with a sense of curiosity. As the synths give way to a funky melodic line, the experience is like a video travelling through uneasy visuals before focussing. The rolling drums are amazing as they tumble your senses to the different layers of the music. There is a beautiful avant-garde flow to the music with the melody moving from that funky line to a lazy beach feeling. The dynamic movement of the melody keeps you guessing but in the best possible way. Each new melodic element introduced adds something special to the overall flow of the music for an entirely too enjoyable listening experience.

While the melody is taking your brain in different directions, the vocals are a solid path that leads you through the music. Complete with complex harmonies, the vocals cut through the sound while letting the melody take hold. It is a beautiful symbiotic relationship that works really well with the vibes of the track. The harmonies as the track reaches its climax swell beneath you as you run along the music. Everything crashes for the climax like the sun break over the horizon after a night of storms.

If you are looking for a song that has a lot going on but brings it all together for a listening experience you aren’t going to forget, ‘My Lover’s’ by Storm: Season is what you need. Each layer of the melody builds on the last while taking you in a new direction. While this could become disjointed, the skill of the execution creates a tight movement down the path laid out by the vocals.
