Hybrid Kid – 1 2 3 (2021)

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is to discover new artists from diverse backgrounds. I’ll admit there are some musicians I follow more closely than others and Hybrid Kid is one of them. One of their many fans, I am always excited to speak about this UK-based indie-rock trio. Merging the sounds of David Bowie, Pavement, The Stooges and Dodgy, Hybrid Kid has a diverse and eclectic sound. With a reputation for energetic and engaging tracks, Danny (guitar and vocals), Tim (bass) and Fabio (drums) have featured on BBC 6Music, Xfm, Radio Reverb and many other radio stations. The latest addition to the group’s critically acclaimed repertoire is the single ‘1 2 3’.

Sharp and brusque, Hybrid Kid showcases the punkier side of their personalities with ‘1 2 3’. Powerful guitars meld seamlessly with pounding drums and rich, robust vocals to create a spiky soundscape for the downtrodden. While the instrumentation is forceful in its own right, featuring several powerhouse crescendos sending the sound of drums and guitars trickling down your spine, it is the vocals that add a greater intimacy to the track.

Despite the brashness of the lyricism, the genuine honesty spills through with Danny’s rich tones. Reminiscent of Joy Division and Sex Pistols, the high-paced single touches on the deeper, more macabre life experiences showcasing Hybrid Kid’s depth of content. Eclectic and energetic, but with a sincere sentimentality, ‘1 2 3’ will have you twirling about while screaming at the top of your voice. It seems that Hybrid Kid has done it again with another boundary-breaking slap to the face.
