Track of the Day: Rosie & George – Art In The End Times

In fair Canterbury where we lay our scene, a tale of two star-crossed lovers decided to make music (instead of killing themselves like in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet). Alright, a little pretentious, but I liked the idea of laying out romance when introducing Rosie & George. They met in December 2019, quickly fell in love and began creating dream-pop meets folk music. Today we’re looking at their debut single ‘Art In The End Times’.

An elegant composition, ‘Art In The End Times’ is, well, art in the end times. With Rosie’s gentle vocals atop George’s simple guitar, the track is a shimmering light at the edge of a deep, dark pit. Produced in their motorhome, the couple describe (in very loose terms) the effects of Covid-19 on musicians across the globe. Instead of writhing in pain and despair during this time, ‘Art In The Dark Times’ focuses on making music to keep one’s spirits alive.

What I truly enjoy is the delicacy and fragility presented in Rosie & George’s debut single. The soft spoken word combined with dream-pop instrumentation has a haunting effect that lingers. Perhaps, possibly unintentional, it is this intricacy and intimacy that makes the song so apt to the current climate. Surreal but also existential, ‘Art In The Dark Times’ is the perfect soundscape for this uncertain time.
