Track of the Day: PAPER BUOYS – LIAA

Since 2016 indie-rock group PAPER BUOYS have been a prominent name in their hometown of Birmingham – that’s in the West Midlands if you’re wondering. With their reputation for energetic performances, compelling lyrics and toe-tapping melodies, this UK quartet is gaining the attention of the local and international press. Featured on BBC 6Music, Louder Than War, On Record Magazine and Underground Press, PAPER BUOYS are building a following on both hemispheres. Following the release of their well-received singles ‘Chasing Ghosts’ and ‘Time Won’t Wait’, Chris Newey (vocals and guitar), Stuart Lidgbird (lead guitar), Jon Perks (bass) and Nick Wanne (drums) showcase their innovativeness in ‘LIAA (Love Is All Around)’.

The track may seem a bit frenzied at first, but it is soon clear that the frenzy is merely an upbeat blast of powerful instrumentation. While the single retains a certain “guitar-driven” approach, the pounding drums are not to be ignored as Wanne makes his presence known; however, it doesn’t overwhelm the melody with all instrumentation weaving together to form an effortless harmony.

Now we come to the vocals. Adopting something between punk and indie-rock, Newey’s voice is the ideal outlet for the tongue-in-cheek lyricism. Bold, rich and a bit “in your face”, the vocals are forceful without being too ferocious. Reminiscent of The Strokes, ‘LIAA’ is a representation of youthful enthusiasm for life.
