Midnight Canyon – Where The Ocean Starts (2020)

2020 has been a difficult year for many, what with the global pandemic and whatnot. Yet, out of these dismal ashes, some good has arisen taking the form of Midnight Canyon. Denied access to their usual music outlets due to Covid-19 lockdowns, Danny Chaimson, Pat McKillen and Packy Lundholm came together to “make art for art’s sake” – an online collaboration, of course. With their unique formation and enticing sound, the US-based trio is gaining a reputation for engaging and eclectic music. In addition to their debut EP Midnight Canyon, the lads have released the single ‘Where The Ocean Starts’.

The lead single from their debut EP Midnight Canyon, ‘Where The Ocean Starts’ is a moving single with powerful instrumentation, compelling lyricism and heartwarming vocals. Reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac, Creedance Clearwater Revival and The Eagles, this guitar-driven single brings old-school folk-rock music into the 21st century with an alternative rock vibe.

A flowing melody with insane guitar riffs, ‘Where The Ocean Starts’ is a soul-stirring, emotive single that almost pulls at your heartstrings. Harmonically woven together, moving instrumentation meets gruff, almost rough vocals. What I find interesting is how the boldness and warmth of the track is accentuated by an underlying modern rock throatiness ala Three Days Grace.

Despite being a robust folk-rock single, ‘Where The Ocean Starts’ has a sense of poignancy with a haunting quality that is utterly beguiling. It’s evocative, inspirational and impassioned and that’s all I have to say about that.
