David Christy Jones – Before The Cold (2020)

It is commonly thought that the Welsh are born with beautiful voices. Now, I don’t know if this is true, but I do know it is the case with singer-songwriter David Christy Jones. Born in Wales, but now residing in Ireland, the West Cork-based artist is known for engaging lyrics, passionate melodies and a rich singing voice.

Performing since 2009 as a session guitarist, bassist and drummer, Jones has experience producing music in various genres. Fusing together elements of alternative rock, grunge, jazz and even some soul here and there, Jones is breeding a distinctive genre-defying sound. The latest addition to his well-received repertoire is the single ‘Before The Cold’.

Following on from his funk-filled singles ‘Virology’ and ‘Idiocy’, ‘Before The Cold’ is an eclectic collision of synth-pop, post-punk and progressive rock. Showcasing his innovativeness as an artist, ‘Before The Cold’ is like combining The Who with elements of The Cure in a modern synth-driven pool of sound. With the experimental texturing, Jones’s new single has various prominent aspects with synths, guitars, drums and haunting vocals.

Exploring sociopolitical themes and the emotional effect of these challenges, ‘Before The Cold’ is an anthem for people facing isolation, hopelessness, anxiety and despair in 2020. A sonic representation of the fragility of individuals in this global pandemic, the single swoops from an upbeat melody to the sound of silence felt by people throughout the world. With the emotive instrumentation, ambient haze and Jones’s ethereal vocals, ‘Before The Cold’ is soul-stirring with the chance of triggering some desperate tears. Thing is, I love every second!
