Secret Treehouse – Overrated (2020)

Hailing from Bergen, Secret Treehouse is a culmination of pop and electronica with some indie-rock undertones. Founded in 2019, or at least that is when they started releasing music on Spotify, the Norwegian five-piece are building a reputation for engaging, moving and intriguing music. On first listen, the surreal quality of their sound adds an “otherworldliness” to the tracks – and this isn’t just a one-off but notable on almost all of their tracks. Following up the emotive single ‘Ice Turns To Ash’ Secret Treehouse releases ‘Overrated’.

Beginning with a simple guitar-driven melody, Secret Treehouse draws you into their swirl of sound. The influence of synths create a hazy and whimsical soundscape for the listener; however, it is Anja Bere’s ethereal vocals that really win a person over in the first few minutes. Reminiscent of Hayley Williams with a touch of Amy Lee, Bere offers a siren-like tone to ‘Overrated’.

Yes, the mystical quality of ‘Overrated’ is breathtaking stirring one’s soul from the first second, but this is not what makes it truly engaging. The emotive lyrics add to sincerity and sentimentality within the track. Similar to Lana Del Rey, the track is something of a personal triumph moving from a desperate place of longing to one of acceptance with “everything being alright”.

Draping Bere’s siren-like vocals over the soul-stirring melody, ‘Overrated’ is a track so beautiful it brings tears to your eyes. Breaking boundaries with their exquisite music, Secret Treehouse is unique, compelling and completely beguiling.
