Rex – Always You (2020)

Hailing from London, England, Rex is a talented singer-songwriter taking the music world by storm. While her music seems to fall into the sub-category indie-pop, this beautiful songstress is by no means bound to a single genre. Using powerful guitar riffs and her upbeat, endearing vocals, rex is known (at least by me) as a buoyant artist with engaging lyricism over a moving melody. The latest addition to her discography is ‘always you’.

The follow-up to her commercial pop debut single ‘Bad Influence’, ‘Always You’ retains the pop sound but with an indie-rock twist. Think Taylor Swift meets Miley Cyrus, but with an alternative rock guitar in the background. I am particularly fond of the guitar solo around two-minutes in which add another dimension to what could be construed by some as a typical pop song. While the beginning may seem quite steady, the melody becomes highly upbeat as the song progresses which makes sense considering the optimistic content.

Similar to many pop artists in the modern pop scene, Rex touches on the topic of love, relationships and romance in general. Yet, while you have those who sing about heartache and a longing to be with someone, Rex looks at the happier side of things. Instead of mourning a person, she exposes the utter joy of soulmates and the reconnection with “the one”. Being a hopeless romantic who reads too many Jane Austen novels, I adore the concept behind ‘Always You’

“I bet you have that one person you will always love, that one person you think “what if”, that one person that always seems to find their way back into your life even when you thought it would never happen again. This is what the song is all about.” – Rex on ‘Always You’

With a song as beautiful as Rex herself, ‘Always You’ is a breath of fresh air amidst the Katy Perry and Taylor Swifts of this world. I can’t wait to see what else she has for us!
