Kala Chng – Breathe Again (2020)

When the pandemic hit, many people turned to the internet to vent their frustrations and express their feelings. Kala Chng noticed this and called out for reflections about the situation which she moulded into her single ‘Breathe Again’. Using the feelings of people who responded, she has created a single that expresses the wider emotional impact felt during this time.

As she shared her progress online, she connected with Doc Moody who offered to co-produce the single. Together, they have created a track that encompasses the full spectrum of human emotions and looks past what a single individual felt. These emotions are wrapped in the combination of traditional and electronic sounds that Kala Chng has become known for.

‘Breathe Again’ has a really interesting opening that grabs your attention with its beats and almost ambient sounds. The melding of different instruments in the opening roll the soundscape over your head and infuse the melody into your veins. There is an intimacy to the melody like you are in a cosy room watching a wintery day pass by. The light tones of the melody have you floating to them as they swirl across your ears and send your senses flying. There is a great rise and fall to the melody that sweeps you up into it.

Kala Chng’s vocals are an atmospheric layer over the melody that gently tumbles down the music like a light breeze. Through her performance, she draws you into a collective feeling and experience. The lyrics are relatable and hit you deep in your chest. While you are inundated with negative feelings from the pandemic, the chorus does give you hope that things are going to be okay and you will be able to breathe again.

Kala Chng draws us all together for a shared experience of the pandemic with the intimate and atmospheric single ‘Breathe Again’. The melody flows over you and draws you into the soundscape while her vocals dance across your senses.
