Kelly Jane – Runaway (2020)

Most people have a plan when they start their adult life, but it doesn’t always turn out the way you thought it would. Life is filled with opportunities and these have a way of changing your plan. Singer-songwriter Kelly Jane discovered this “adulting” after hitting her twenties.

Influenced by artists like Corinne Bailey Raw and Jack Johnson, Kelly Jane dove into the world of pop/jazz at the tender age of 13 when she began playing the guitar to support her singing and songwriting. In 2017, Kelly June recorded her debut EP Took Some Time to critical acclaim. The follow-up to the EP is the expressive single ‘Runaway’.

“I don’t think anyone can prepare you for your twenties. You’ve had everything mapped out and then suddenly, bam, you’re in the adult world.” – Kelly Jane on ‘Runaway’

Recorded in Jane’s small London flat, ‘Runaway’ was penned only six months after her graduation. Confused, anxious and highly frustrated, Jane decided to run away and travelled to the other side of the world to find answers and deal with these issues. The raw honesty and depth of emotion are expressed well in her brusque lyricism – “I want to run away but I don’t know where I wanna go”.

Lyrically, the song oozes genuineness; however, it is Jane’s voice that really leaves you hypnotised. With simple vocals between Florence + The Machine and Carol King, Kelly Jane has a natural talent for old-school folk in contemporary society.
