A Chat with Alex Frew (19.10.20)

Following on from his well-received debut single ‘Get Out Alive’, Canadian crooner Alex Frew is making waves with his new hit ‘Antisocial Love Song’. We speak with this talented singer-songwriter about the new single, bad haircuts and future plans.

OSR: What is the backstory to your single ‘Antisocial Love Song’?

Frew: ‘Antisocial Love Song’ stemmed directly from the introverted feeling of wanting to be alone with your favourite person and feeling overwhelmed by everyone else. It’s a pretty human emotion that I think we’ve all felt at one point, so I believe it’s pretty universal.

OSR: Does the single have a significant meaning for you?

Frew: Yeah, for sure, it brings up a lot of memories. This song was also written years ago now, so it brings me back to the time when we were putting the project together which always brings on a nostalgia kick.

OSR: No offense, but you’re still really young. Do you think age plays a role when writing and composing music?

Frew: No, and I don’t think it should in any way. If people have valuable ideas and the right attitude there is no reason that age should have any importance regarding your ability to make music. That’s not to say experience isn’t valuable, just that you shouldn’t let age define your compositions.

OSR: What about the rest of the music industry (production, marketing, etc)? Is it more beneficial to be older?

Frew: If anything, I would argue youth can be valuable in the modern world where connection and social media play a massive role in the music industry. There are pros and cons, but I don’t believe it’s a negative overall.

OSR: If you could change anything about ‘Antisocial Love Song’ what would it be?

Frew: I would love to put some groovy drums in a few sections, but that’s what remixes are for!

OSR: How do you keep yourself motivated, particularly during the Covid-19 lockdown?

Frew: I try my best to stick to a schedule and just take everything one day at a time. I find it’s important to remember that everyone is in the same boat.

OSR: What is the worst haircut you have ever received?

Frew: I used to have a bowl cut in Grade 4! Good times…

OSR: What does the future hold for Alex Frew?

Frew: I’ll be releasing an entire EP next year which I am very excited to share with everyone. We’ve also got some awesome video content in the works, so stay in the loop for that.

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Frew: My singles ‘Get Out Alive’ and ‘Antisocial Love Song’ are out on all platforms now! Go check them out!
