Hennessey – No Transformation (2020)

Hennessey captivated us with their take on ‘We Will Not Be Lovers’ and are back with an original composition. ‘No Transformation’ is their hymn to acceptance and understanding who we are. Written by Leah Hennessey, the track works through all the criticism we have of ourselves. Through this, you are led to the understanding that you can only evolve as a person or be happy when you accept where you are and who you are.

The song is packed with poetic lyrics and beautiful honesty. This is a song that most people will be able to connect with on some level making it almost an anthem. If you are looking for a song that can help you break the negative feedback cycle you might be stuck in, this could be the one you need.

The pulsing beats of ‘No Transformation’ meld with the omnichord background. The melody of the track is a solid presence throughout the song broken only by the high notes that come and go. These lights notes are wonderful because they not only break the backing of the melody, but they are the lights of hope against the negativity. The combination of elements in the melody creates a sombre backing for Hennessey’s vocals.

Her voice is a middle layer between the deep backing synths and the light notes. Her voice has a lilting and drawing quality that leads you into the lyrics. The lyrics are full of all the things she feels are bad about herself and what she should be. However, the chorus swings the perceptions and brings an acceptance that it is too late to change.

Hennessey helps you break the negative feedback loop and accept yourself with ‘No Transformation’. The sombre melody is broken by light tones that act as hope and understanding. The vocals are smooth and draw you in as you work toward accepting yourself.
