Kid Violet – Lights Out (2020)

Being played by your ex is never a good thing, but there are times when you might sort of enjoy it. This strange time is the basis of ‘Lights Out’ by Kid Violet. Using their usual abundance of energy, the band tugs on your heartstrings before everything blows up in your face. Their dynamic and edgy sound is perfect for capturing the strange interplay of emotions during the subject moment.

The five-piece band takes inspiration from a range of artists and infuse this with their own love for music. Billy (vocals), Pawel (guitar), Charley (guitar), Tom (drums) and Matteo (bass) had planned a string of festival dates, but will have you geared up for their world domination next year with this single. Adding to the build-up to their debut EP coming in March 2021, this single gives you a taste of what they have to offer.

‘Lights Out’ hits you with this groovy guitar line that draws you to Billy’s vocals. There is an energy to his performance that is contagious and gets you into the vibe of the song. The lyrics help build the picture of an ex who is playing you while the emotive performance tells you everything you need to know about how this is being taken. On the chorus, the vocals soar and somehow become even more gripping as you feel compelled to sing along.

That groovy guitar line from the opening continues throughout the single. There is a lot of energy in the melody, but it does not become overwhelming. You can hear an edge to the instruments, but the pace drives through you without making your heart pump like crazy. Throughout the single, you can hear the passion the band has for what they do.

Kid Violet infuses all their energy into the strange interplay of emotions that is ‘Lights Out’. The driving melody keeps you hooked while the vocals take you through the upset of being played by your ex and the strange enjoyment of this.
