Simone Casarotti – Cantaloupe (2020)

Hailing from north-eastern Italy, but now based in East London, England, Simone Casarotti is an emerging indie-pop musician with a unique and innovative sound. Inspired by pop from the 1970s and 1980s, Casarotti’s music is uplifting, invigorating and somewhat nostalgic. The latest addition to his repertoire is the single ‘Cantaloupe’.

The majority of art, be it music, film or fine arts, is typically a form of self-expression and so is the case of ‘Cantaloupe’. Inspired by his early life in Italy, the track is a cheerful synth-driven anthem allowing Casarotti to free himself of personal struggle and teenage drama. Recalling tales of his father’s adolescence, ‘Cantaloupe’ allows Casarotti to rewrite his history with the idolised memories redefining his happiness and joy.

What I find most enjoyable is the way his instrumentation enhances the lyrics and increases the meaning behind the track. Using a DIY approach to music, Casarotti records and produces all his music in his home studio (also known as his bedroom), and the rawness of the production can be heard in the layered vocals. With this simplistic sound, it seems as if we were sitting in the same room singing along.

A follow-up to his debut single ‘Blu’, ‘Cantaloupe’ is a synth-driven track reminiscent of acts like ABBA and The Bee Gees. Oozing sincerity, hopefulness, honesty and joy, Simone Casarotti has captivated me with his enchanting ‘Cantaloupe’.
