Katie Kittermaster – One of a Kind (2020)

With her soulful sounds and witty lyrics, Katie Kittermaster is a representative of young adults in 2020. Using an upbeat tune, but focusing on melancholic perspectives, Kittermaster brings the 1990s and early 2000s pop scene into this new decade.

But what do we know about Katie?

Hailing from the UK, Kittermaster is a solo pop artist leaning on her vocals and guitar instead of synth-driven tracks. Opening for the likes of Ronan Keating, Jools Holland, Olly Murs and Lucy Spraggan, Kittermaster has built a name for herself with a loyal following. Her well-received 2019 EP Coming Home At Dawn examines relationships, self-empowerment, self-expression and, basically, being a young woman in today’s world. The latest single ‘One of a Kind’ is a skillful continuation of these narratives.

Written during 2019 while in Berlin, Germany, ‘One of a Kind’ looks at the complex issue of cutting ties with someone you truly care about. Compelling lyrics placed to a catchy, upbeat melody makes this an emotional and enchanting track. One of Kittermaster’s core elements in her music is the juxtaposition of sombre lyrics with a cheerful sound. It’s common for people to use this complex design when writing music, but Kittermaster’s sincerity and honesty make her edgier.

“I guess it’s about being too scared to cut ties with someone that you really care about, someone you never want to hurt or lose and knowing that putting yourself first might inevitably lead to hurting and losing them. It’s about being a little selfish but being scared that you might lose someone who is ‘one of a kind’.” – Katie Kittermaster on ‘One of a Kind’

Reminiscent of Billie Piper and Sophie Ellis-Bexter – in fact, there is a reference to Ellis-Bexter’s ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, ‘One of a Kind’ is an uplifting and anthemic track with dancefloor sensibilities. Truth be told, it has made me a little nostalgic remembering pop music from my teens, but Kittermaster pulls Billie Piper into the 21st century with her soulful single.
