Back Room Scene – Chapter One (2020)

Using his debut EP Chapter One, David Cervera’s latest project Back Room Scene explores the human condition. Using a melancholic tone, the EP takes a swing at the big questions of life, faith and loss. From holding everything in to the struggles of relationships and the loss of those dear to us, this three-track EP packs a lot into something so small.

Setting the scene and foundation of this musical project, the EP gives you an insight into what to expect in the future. Using organic songwriting and production, Cervera brings everyone together with his authentic musical style. Each track is a step at the start of a journey that I am interested in seeing through.

The first track is ‘Hold It In With Tension’ and looks at the big things in life and how some people think they have the answers or meaning of them. The gentle piano line draws you into the song before Cervera’s vocals hit you with this airy tone. His voice seems to hover over you, much like the big things in life. There is a great vibe to this song as you are gently led by the piano while his vocals wrap around you. Offering no answers, he makes you think about things which is a much better route.

‘Heatwave’ has this progressive opening that slowly and softly draws you into the ballad. In essence a love song, this track looks at the joys of love but also considers the difficulties of love and marriage. The lightness of this track is beautiful and makes it more poignant. You are swept away on the flowing stream of the melody while the vocals act as a raft softly cushioning your journey. Through the tribulations in the lyrics, you are shown that bumps in a relationship can make it stronger.

The EP ends with ‘Travelling Show’ which has a deeper opening diverting from the airy vocals of the previous songs. The deeper tone of the vocals and the sombre piano line complements the loss-soaked lyrics. Taking on the loss of people close to you, this song finds a perfect balance between melancholy, sadness and having to move forward. There is this thread of nostalgia woven into the track, but it does not overwhelm the other emotions invoked by the song.

Back Room Scene starts you on a journey of contemplating the big questions of life in Chapter One. This short EP packs so much into three songs. Each song takes on a different aspect of life with this relatable vibe and honesty that leaves you exploring the inner workings of the human condition.
