A Chat with The Shelter (26.08.2020)

The Shelter impressed us with their single ‘Roads of Mexico‘ and have continued to captivate us with the track’s new music video. The effortless vibe of the single translates into the video and leaves you wanting more. We sat down with The Shelter to talk about the single, the music video, their music and much more!

OSR: How did the band get together?

The Shelter: After a few months of suffering from agoraphobia and struggling with anxiety, Elias (vocals) decided to put a band together, that way he could do something and be distracted from his anxiety. He knew Javier from years before, so he called him and they started writing music and rehearsing in January this year.

OSR: You have recently released a video for your single ‘Roads of Mexico’, where was the video recorded?

The Shelter: The video was recorded at a lake that is 30 minutes away from Mexico City. It is called ‘Laguna de Zempoala’ in the state of Morelos. It was actually closed due to COVID, but the locals were very nice and they let us in.

OSR: What was the creative process for creating the music video?

The Shelter: We knew we wanted to show a little bit of the Mexican landscape. So, the director, Aaron Moreno, knew this lake and he took us there. We just did some playback as we were on a stage and we used some references from painters like Millet and Bouguereau. We don’t think anyone noticed! (laughs).

OSR: You have taken on the ambitious task of releasing a new song and video each month until December, what prompted this?

The Shelter: After the whole COVID thing started, we knew it was going to be impossible to perform live this year. We knew we had to be busy somehow. That’s why we decided to release a new song each month.

OSR: How do you feel the theme of ‘Roads of Mexico’ has translated into the visuals of the video?

The Shelter: We think it fits perfectly. The place is so green and beautiful but we used black and white to represent the lockdown.

OSR: What do you enjoy the most and the least about creating music and videos?

The Shelter: We really enjoy making both, it is lots of fun. Maybe what we enjoy the least would be the heat, as we are always wearing suits. Sometimes it gets too hot and you sweat a lot, but that’s it. (laughs)

OSR: If the band were pack animals, what would you be and why?

The Shelter: Penguins, why? Just take a look at us! (laughs)

OSR: You are planning to start touring after lockdown, where are you most excited to play?

The Shelter: Right now, the places where people listen to us most are Germany, Brazil, USA, UK and France, so, those places.

OSR: If you could play at any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

The Shelter: Madison Square Garden ?

OSR: Do you have a message for your fans?

The Shelter: Stay strong, stay healthy, take vitamins, use a mask and keep rocking!
