Tom Saint – Thicker Than Water (2020)

Betrayal and resurrection are the heavy topics forming the foundation of Tom Saint’s new single. ‘Thicker than Water’ looks at the distinct wound that only someone you have thought of as blood can inflict. Using twisted electronics and emo-pop vibes, he works through the damage done and the road to eventually overcome the wound.

Fusing elements of contemporary producers with the angst of noughties rock bands, Saint, collaborating with James Yuill, will get you hooked. No beginner to the art of production, Saint was part of the house duo HOST and honed his skills under Steve Dub (The Chemical Brothers). He has also worked as a live session keys player while honing his songwriting skills.

Deep synths and lighter notes grab your attention in the opening of ‘Thicker than Water’. You are then thrown into Saint’s lightly distorted vocals. Throughout the single, you can hear the anger and betrayal of the lyrics in his performance. There is a grittiness to the performance that creates this vibe where the message of the lyrics hit harder. It is so emotive that you might become angry and betrayed on his behalf which is a sure sign of a great performance.

While his vocals rile you up, the melody works to push you over the edge. There is a hint of rock melodies to it, but the deep electronic notes hit against you. They undulate below the vocals to push the emotions into your chest. This melding of emotive drives is outstanding and really makes the single stand out.

Tom Saint gets you riled up and feeling betrayed in his single ‘Thicker than Water’. The pushing electronic notes combine with his vocals to leave you feeling emotional at the end. While full of these feelings, the single does give you some hope that you can get over them.
