9 o’clock Nasty – Too Cool (2023)
Can a person be too cool? Well, can they? Too cool for school; too cool for drool…just, too cool. After listening to the three-minute punk-rock scramble in my brain, I think 9 o’clock Nasty has cracked the secret to being too cool with their song ‘Too Cool’. Have I said too cool too much? I don’t even care.
A feature favourite on The Other Side Reviews, 9 o’clock Nasty has become one of those bands whose music I thrive on. I love to taste more of their music, and they never let me down. Ending 2022 with their track ‘Rise Up’, ‘Too Cool’ shakes you awake rubbing that sleep from the corner of your eye. The thing is, while the UK-based trio could be thrust into the “punk meets grunge” genre, ‘Too Cool’ is a fusion of their old-school punk tinged with elements of vintage rock ‘n’ roll. Interestingly enough, while a dark, rock flow exists in the melody, the pounding drums and bold guitars send your heart soaring with their obscure distortion.
Described by notable publications as having an “…unparalleled ability to create social commentary through their lens of wisdom and experience…” (Karl Is My Unkle), 9 o’clock Nasty once again blinds us with profound, albeit ironic narratives about life, love, loss and everything that goes with it. Recorded with music producer Hugo GT, the lads share that “he took our beautiful song and twisted and tortured it beyond recognition…” – to be honest, I think the twisting and torturing resulted in something beyond beautiful. Well done, Hugo!
As with most of their music, the lyricism is engaging and, somehow, fits elegantly into the brash, raw, heart-pounding abruptness of 9 o’clock Nasty. I am not sure if ‘Too Cool’ is sincere or sentimental, but there is a jaw-dropping awesomeness that overtakes you as the song progresses. A toe-tapping thumping leaves you dancing about while the lads take over your brain – slowly, strategically, and before you know it you are under their spell.
