9 o’clock Nasty – The WRong Guy (2024)
Upon listening to 9 o’clock Nasty’s new single about mistaken identity, my mind immediately went to Alfred Hitchcock’s North By Northwest. After a glitch at the airport, Cary Grant went from simple salesman to hunted hitman in a single conversation and, well, he landed up dealing with more sh*t than he can imagine. Why this connection? I don’t really know; perhaps it’s the idea of Cary Grant getting down to a hip-hop-inspired punk tune that drew my fancy.
Following their well-received single ‘Hot Disco Shit’, followed by a couple of remixes including ‘The Wrong Guy’ with Kingflame, 9 o’clock Nasty present the pure, raw, unadulterated original of ‘The Wrong Guy’. A pioneering threesome of punk rock royalty, the Leicestershire lads hit you in the face with every outstanding note. A quick backhand to the cheek but not in that creepy “you’re stuffed” way, a sleek allure to a mischievous mess of gut-wrenching music.
Similar to ‘Hot Disco Shit’, a funk-filled tune with punk clinging to the sides, ‘The Wrong Guy’ shows us another side to 9 o’clock Nasty’s personality. Instead of funk, they bring a head-bopping hip-hop beat layered rap, flits of funk, and punk once again clinging to the wrapper. Combining a pulsating beat with slices of keyboard, the underlying melody is simplistic; it is the gruff vocals that ruffle your feathers and shove you about but with an infectious cheekiness.
Gruff, raw, jagged and scathing, ‘The Wrong Guy’ is a sarcastic sideline at a serious situation. Considering the rifeness of identity theft, anyone is a target – I mean, why do you think there are so many ads for PC security? Yet, 9 o’clock Nasty once again grabs at reality’s grungy problems demanding attention to the issue, but with a toe-tapping hit of sarcasm.
… still think Cary Grant getting down hip-hop style is an outstanding idea.
In addition to the single, 9 o’clock Nasty released an official music video for ‘The Wrong Guy’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
